Canoe/Kayak River Guide

Cubic feet per second (cfs)
100 - 450 cfs: Very slow moving water (no rapids)
450 - 1000 cfs: Gentle current perfect conditions for all Trips
1000 - 1600 cfs: Quicker water with small ripples. No childern under age of 8
1600 - 2600 cfs: Adults Only. Previous canoe/kayak experience recommended

Overnight Canoe Trips & Camping

The Saco River offers miles of pristine sandy beaches for wilderness camping. Most areas are free camping so all you will need is a fire permit. or paddle to one of the area's campgrounds.

Pick up at Fiddlehead Campground, shuttle to Swan’s Falls, paddle back to Fiddlehead.

Drop off at Fiddlehead, paddle to Lovewell Pond, shuttle back to Fiddlehead.

Swans Fall's to Lovewell Pond
This trip is the most popular trip with an easy exit at Lovewell Pond

Weekends can be very busy on the river. Best time for families is midweek or starting at Lovewell Pond to Hiram.

Saco River Family Trips

The Saco River can be very busy on summer weekend so for families and individuals looking for a less crowded wilderness experience, we recommend the following trips. We also have included a couple of nice camping areas which offer limited services.

Canal Bridge to Brownfield Bridge
2 days/1 night

Length: 15 miles Paddle time: Approx. 7-12 hours
               
Start at Canal Bridge and paddle 8 miles to the more secluded Walker’s Falls Camping Area. This small campground offers porta-toilets and fire rings. Great swim hole. On your second day you  paddle 7 miles to Brownfield Bridge. Free camping can be found along the river.

Canal Bridge to Hiram
3 days/2 nights

Length: 26 miles Paddle time: Approx. 12-6 hours

Start at Canal Bridge and paddle to Walker’s Fall’s for your first night. On your second day you can paddle 10 miles and stop at Shannon’s Sanctuary for a full service campground. ($30 for river front site)  Day 3 would include an 8 mile paddle to Hiram to finish your trip.
