Each summer people come to the area to camp along the sandy banks of the Saco River. For many this is a rite of summer. Each weekend you will hundreds of people with family and friends enjoying the pristine Saco River Waters. Along the way you can find a pristine beach to camp or paddle to one of the area's campgrounds.

Saco River Family Trips
The Saco River can be very busy on summer weekends. Families and individuals looking for a less crowded wilderness experience we would recommend the following trips: We have included a couple of nice camping area’s with limited services.
Trip 2 Days 1 Night Distance Approximate Paddle Time
Canal Bridge to Brownfield Bridge 15 miles 7-12 hours
Start at Canal Bridge and paddle 8 miles to the more secluded Walker’s Falls Camping Area.* This small campground offers porta-toilets and fire rings. Great swim hole. On your second day you can paddle 7 miles to Brownfield Bridge. Free camping can be found along river. Walker’s Falls charges $7 per person.
Trip 3 Days & 2 Nights Distance Approximate Paddle Time
Canal Bridge to Hiram 26 miles 12-6 hours
Start at Canal Bridge and paddle to Walker’s Fall’s for your first night. On your second day you can paddle 10 miles and stop at Shannon’s Sanctuary for a full service campground. ($30 for river front site) Day 3 would include an 8 mile paddle to Hiram to finish your trip.
These trips can be customized. Reservations are recommended for individuals who want to stay at either Walker’s Falls or Shannon’s Sanctuary.

The Saco River offers miles of pristine sandy beaches for wilderness camping. Most areas are free camping and all you need is a fire permit. Three miles past Swan's Falls is the Fiddlehead Camping Area which offers the nicest beaches along the Saco River. This 3 mile stretch of river cost $10 per person per Midweek night and $15 for weekends. Fiddlehead Camping is extremely popular.
The area offers wilderness camping with porto toilets, picnic tables, wood and fire rings. It is the most popular place to camp on weekends.
